That's a damn shame. I saw him play in Seattle a few years ago and wrote a poem ("Max Roach Smiles and I Know Why") about the experience. Here was this little old man who needed help getting to the stage, but as soon as he started playing...just magic.
Check YouTube for some slick clips--Max improving along with spoken word (spoken word provided by MLK Jr.!--actually his I have a dream speech)...but yes, do listen to Money Jungle if you can find it--a fierce little trio: Max Roach, Charles Mingus, & Duke Friggin' Ellington! Terrific stuff! "Fluerette Africaine" is IT man!
